Aloha!

This collection of arrangements for solo ʻukulele using the reentrant high G tuning presents songs from the Monarchy Era through the present day with the goal of helping you not only build your repertoire of Hawaiian songs but also to develop understanding of song forms, technique, and phrasing used to play in the Hawaiian style. You will find typical progressions, chord shapes, vamps, picking patterns, variations, and examples of paʻani or solos as well.

The music is influenced by a wide range of sources from the ancient sounds of ʻoli and kahiko hula, hymnals, swing music, Jazz, Spanish music, Potuguese music, to contemporary music which has all helped shape the unique and celebrated sound of Hawaiian music over generations. Many songs are mele pana or songs of place from areas around Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi, Ōʻahu, and Kauaʻi. Other songs are mele hoʻoipoipo or love songs that use kaona or poetic references to love with the beauty and the forces of nature in the islands.

Many of the songs use moving 6th intervals and rhythms from the paniolo and kī hoʻalu (slack key) traditions. Hawaiian style phrasing is brought to life thoughout the collection of songs with inflections including slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and harmonics.

I hope this music inspires you while bringing you great enjoyment celebrating Hawaiian heritage, the spirit of aloha, and the nahenahe sound of the ʻukulele.
