2026-08-02 | Developing pieces | Ode to Joy WW? Since last week, tempo has improved and I think less choppy also. DD? Innacuracies in 3rd phrase, despite lots of practice - time to give this one a rest. P/G? Spaced practice - once every second day for next week for all three developiong pieces (Tu, Th, Sat) https://youtu.be/qcq26WeHz34

2026-08-02 | Developing pieces | Ode to Joy WW? Since last week, accuracy and tone has improved a little, along with tempo and continuity (less choppy) DD? Still pretting choppy. Not sure about sound level - uke may be too close. P/G? Risk over overcooking these pieces. A bit of spaced practice will likely help. Keep experimenting with mic set up. https://youtu.be/pgBDFQVEA-k

2026-08-02 | Developing pieces | Aura Lee WW? Slightly less choppy than last week. Slightly better accuracy. DD? Still pretting choppy. Control of dynamics can be improved. P/G? Keep working on letting notes ring to connect them smoothly. https://youtu.be/DSMp1Mn854c

EOW reflection: 2 Aug 2026 Working well? – using iPhone audio recorder during practice sessions to identify problems then check they are resolved – targetting continuity of notes using JP's recommended exercise - lots of room for improvement but on the right track – marching along with metronome when practising to internalise rhythm – sight reading practice proving beneficial when working with repertoire (I can see rhythm of melody more easily) – identifying and targetting specific trouble spots; e.g., a…

Another first take performance, and my first post with singing, which in hindsight may have benefited from some vocal warm ups. Please excuse the yodelling at the end - not sure where that came from. Feedback, especially what might be improved, is welcome, as always. https://youtu.be/GF3riGf_ATk

Hello! I've had my eye on the site and the instrument for a while and finally decided to join and give it a try. I'm a member at the Classical Guitar Corner Academy, so it was easy just to hop over the fence or hop to the next island, as the case may be. I am a total beginner with the ukulele. I don't even own one yet. Which brings me to my first question: how to proceed with getting…

  • Warwick replied to intonation issues 2 hours ago

A couple of additional thoughts here. Take them for whatever they might be worth. My former ukulele teacher told me he had a very expensive custom made uke that had awful intonation from the moment he received it . He had a luthier adjust it at least once, maybe twice - I can't recall exactly - with no noticeable mprovement. He eventually thought to try a different type of strings and found this solved the problem enitrely. I had a…

I'm a big fan of Molly Gebrian's work on evidence-based practice strategies. She also has a great newsletter in which she shares ideas on how to practice more effectively. Her newsletter archive is available here. Her suggestions have really changed how I approach uke practice, and the benefits have been noticeable.

So maybe we – ukulele players – could be a bit like Western African griots – oral historians and story tellers. Restoring the equilibrium in this world – and sense of community – if one can dream that. Thanks for sharing these thoughts, Tom. This is a nice dream! I think there is something a little magical about the ukulele in particular that can help make this dream a reality - just the sight of someone strumming an ukulele is…

Loved your performance of this piece! You have such great control of all that delicate fingering with the pinky. It sounded delightful.

PS You got me curious, so I tried the AT2020USB-X mic on my wife's newer iphone with USB-C connector, and it didn't work. Turns out it's not officially supported, and it seems a powered USB-C hub is required.

Is this microphone not directly compatible with an iPhone? The internet of things says that it can be connected directly to your iPhone 17 via USB-C connector, but I have an older iPhone 11 with lightning connector, which requires an adapter. I may end of getting the adapter if syncing audio and video manually on my laptop gets becomes too much of a hassle.
