Pavana 2 by Milan for Classical Ukulele
In this video Jeff Peterson plays his low-G arrangement of Pavana 2 by Milan for classical ukulele from El Maestro. This is the second of six pieces by Spanish Renaissance composer Luis Milan, utilizing the Pavane form. The Pavane was a majestic processional dance performed by the aristocracy to open ceremonial galas across Europe. As you play this beautiful Pavane, imagine the grandeur of such events.
Performance Notes
Although the piece is written in 4/4 time, you can feel it in 2, counting half notes as one beat at 70 bpm. The composition features many three- and four-note block chords, along with flowing melodic lines. Focus on producing a rich, warm tone with as much sustain as possible.
While the original score includes no dynamics, you’re encouraged to add your own interpretative elements. I recommend playing repeated phrases more softly, as if they were echoes—measures 6, 47, and 56 are good examples of where this can be applied. Additionally, experiment with tonal contrasts throughout the piece. As it moves through various key centers, you can highlight these shifts with changes in volume and tone, adding depth and expression to your performance.
