Etude 11 by Carulli for Classical Ukulele
In this video, Jeff Peterson performs his arrangement of Etude 11 by Carulli for classical ukulele.
Performance Notes
This etude is set in 6/8 time, with six beats per measure, where the eighth note receives one count. To maintain the correct emphasis, divide each measure into two groups of three beats, placing emphasis on the 1st and 4th eighth notes. Count the rhythm as 1-2-3, 4-5-6. After the initial eighth-note anacrusis that begins the piece, the rhythm consists of a quarter note followed by an eighth note. This is a pattern that repeats in the second half of the first measure and continues into the second measure. Count this rhythm as 1 (2) 3, 4 (5) 6. The bass notes sustain for every three beats beneath this rhythm.
This creates a lively, dance-like feel that transitions into flowing eighth notes in measure 3 and into measure 4. Remember, in 6/8 time, the quarter note now gets two counts. In the second half of the piece, the music moves to a flowing eighth-note arpeggiation. Allow the notes to overlap to form chords, bringing out the harmonic movement through G7, C, F, E7, Am, and Dm chords.
